Update on Rights Defender Zhang Haitao

On February 19, 2016, the Urumqi Intermediate People’s Court convicted Xinjiang rights defender Zhang Haitao of “inciting subversion of state power” and “spying for foreign entities and unlawful providing intelligence” and sentenced him to 19 years in prison and five years of deprivation of political rights. The court also ordered confiscation of the RMB 120,000 of his personal assets. Lawyer Liu Zhengqing says that Zhang, his client, is strong, firmly maintains his innocence, and has initiated an appeal.


【张海涛案情况通报】(说明:因本这几天很忙,再加之身体微恙未及时发布,特致歉!)2016年2月18日(星期四)上午在乌鲁木齐市新疆维吾尔自治区看守所会见了张海涛。张海涛很坚强,他说:看守所的警察劝认罪,争取轻判,但他认为自己无罪。他说“我是无罪的,我始终会为自己做无罪辩护”。要我转转告:对外面朋友们的关心和帮助,表示感谢!

一审判处张海涛:煽动颠覆国家政权罪有期徒刑15年,剥夺政治权利5年,并处没收个人财产10万元;为境外刺探、非法提供情报罪有期徒刑5年,剥夺政治权利1年,并处没收个人财产2万元。数罪并罚有期徒刑19年,剥夺政治权利5年,并处没收个人财产12万元。判后,张海涛提出了上诉。

当天下午即到乌鲁木齐市中级法院与经办法官交涉此案的相关意见及递交相关法律手续。在家属的陪伴下约见了一审经办法官王某。王某称当天(2016年2月18日)下午向高院移交卷宗,律师阅卷要到高院才能阅,并告阅卷时最好事先与高院联系。
